House Approves Amendment To Prevent Same Sex Marriage
The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday night approved an amendment to the Commerce-Justice-Science Appropriations bill to prevent the Obama Administration from taking legal action against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) or state constitutional amendments prohibiting same sex marriage.
“As many of us know, just last night the 30th state passed an amendment to amend its constitution to protect traditional marriage,” Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS), who offered the amendment, said. “That would be North Carolina, and in my opinion it has become an easy target for the Administration.”
The amendment was passed by a vote of 245-171.
Huelskamp said the Obama Administration “in a very clear and flagrant violation of its responsibilities” had stopped enforcing DOMA.
“I am offering an amendment to prohibit the Department of Justice from spending tax payer money to undermine the Defense of Marriage Act,” he explained.

NATO Air Strike In Libya Killed 72 Civilians Including 24 Children and 20 Women
NATO air strikes killed 72 civilians in Libya last year, Human Rights Watch said on Monday, accusing the western alliance of failing to acknowledge the scope of collateral damage it caused during the campaign that helped oust Muammar Gaddafi.
In a report based on investigations at bombing sites during and after the conflict, the New York-based HRW said NATO strikes killed 20 women and 24 children. It called on the alliance to compensate civilian victims and investigate attacks that may have been unlawful.
“Attacks are allowed only on military targets, and serious questions remain in some incidents about what exactly NATO forces were striking,” Fred Abrahams, special adviser at HRW, said in a statement.
The report claims to be the most extensive investigation to date of civilian casualties from NATO’s air campaign and presents a higher death toll estimate than a March paper by Amnesty International which documented 55 civilian deaths, including 16 children and 14 women.

Tens of Thousands of Police March on Central London - May 11
hey were out of uniform, of course, but some habits die hard. As tens of thousands of off-dutypolice officers gathered in central London on Thursday to march against job cuts and changes to their pension deals, march organisers handed them baseball caps, which the overwhelmingly majority promptly, obediently, put on.
Some of the hats – 16,000 to be precise – were black, to represent the number of jobs that the Police Federation of England and Wales estimates could be lost under proposed cuts to policing services. Others were white, representing nothing more than that they had run out of black ones. It made an impressive image – a long, snaking and terribly well-behaved crowd, looking exactly like a bunch of police officers on their day off.
